2010 Sculling Program
Beginning with the 2010 season, Steve will implement the following program for sculling.
New Scullers
Steve will provide beginning instruction to any club member upon request. Please contact Steve via email to arrange a mutually agreeable time for a ~2 hour introductory session.
Recreational Sculling
Steve will provide coaching for recreational scullers, but those who participate must practice between coached sessions and follow a lesson plan composed of drills, conditioning and flexibility sessions that he will provide to each sculler. The sculler must maintain a log of practice sessions. Each sculler will be provided 1 hour of coaching for every 4 hours of practice.
Competitive Sculling
This new group will be small, limited to a maximum of five women and five men. The focus will be on training and technique, with a commitment to compete in several regattas during the course of the season. These most likely would include:
Oak Ridge Dogwood Regatta (late April)
Tulsa Sprints (April)
The Grand (June)
Chicago Sprints (July)
Gateway (July)
World FISA Masters, St. Catherines, Ontario (September)
We will row in singles, doubles and quad, with the focus boat being the quad. There will be four scullers and a spare, so that if a particular rower is injured or unavailable, the boat can still go. This program is open to intermediate and above scullers. If more than five men and five women apply, we will make selections based on (age/weight handicapped) erg scores, The age handicap will be the same used for the Crash Bs. The weigh handicapped will be -(1/6) second per 500 meters for each kilo over the lowest weight for each group (taken from Anu Duda's web site on the physics of rowing, the impact of dead weight on boat speed).
Scullers must attend regular 1.5 hour sessions 4x weekly: Tue/Thur at 5:30 AM, Sat/Sun at 7:00 AM (earlier when daypight permits, per the will of the group). Non-practice day sessions will be assigned. Participants will be expected to train 6 days per week.
We will begin February 1, 2010, and the first sessions will be on land.
Please contact Steve via email to apply for a spot in the competitive sculling group.
